The 21st Oregon Junior Golf Tournament of Champions concluded the summer season on Saturday, Sept. 13th at Illahe Hills
Country Club in Salem, Ore.
The day consisted of champions of Oregon Junior Golf majors and sanctioned tournaments competing in skills challenges and 18 holes of golf (9 holes for Pee Wee Girls and PW Boys 8-9). The event ended with a banquet hosted for all players and their families, where the 2014 Oregon Junior Golf Players of the Year were announced – Gigi Stoll (Tigard, Ore.) and Riley Elmes (Lake Oswego, Ore.).
“We want to thank all of the players, family members and volunteers for another amazing summer of Oregon Junior Golf,” said Robyn Lorain, Director of Oregon Junior Golf. “We couldn’t have had the success we did without all of the help and participation that we received. We’re already looking forward to the 2014-15 Winter Series and to next year’s summer season!”
Stoll completed her final Oregon Junior Golf season by winning the Tournament of Champions – Girls Division on Saturday, shooting a 3-under par 69. She had a remarkable stretch of results earlier in the summer, winning both the Oregon Women’s Amateur and the Oregon Junior Amateur Championship, becoming just the fifth person to hold both titles concurrently.
Along with those titles, Stoll won the Portland Classic Amateur Open, which automatically qualified her for the LPGA Portland Classic Presented by Cambia Health Solutions. She finished tied for 52nd against the best professional women’s golfers in the world, making the cut and shooting scores of 71-74-71-71 – 287 (-1). Stoll also finished second in the 2014 Oregon Women’s Stroke Play Championship.
Elmes won four Oregon Junior Golf major tournaments in 2014, including the Oregon Junior Amateur and the Oregon Junior
Stroke Play Championships. He also finished first in the Central Willamette Junior and the Klamath Basin Junior. Elmes represented Oregon at two distinguished team competitions this summer: The Junior America’s Cup and the Eddie Hogan Cup. In the latter tournament, Elmes finished tied for fifth individually, helping Team Oregon #1 to a second place finish.
Joining Stoll at 3-under par was Cole Madey (West Linn, Ore.), who earned first place in the Juniors Division. Reese Fisher (Medford, Ore.) won the Boys Division with an even-par round of 72, while Samuel Pyon (Happy Valley, Ore.) won the Intermediate Boys Division title with the third under-par round of the tournament, a 1-under par 71.
In the Intermediate Girls Division, May Wang (Portland, Ore.) shot 9-over par 81 to win the division by three shots. Brody Marconi (Portland, Ore.) won the Pee Wee Boys 10-11 Division, finishing with an impressive score of 72, even par. In the Pee Wee Girls 10-11 Division, Riley Hammericksen (Medford, Ore.) shot a 41 to win the division, while Jade Gruher (Camas, Wash.) won the Pee Wee Girls 8-9 Division, winning the title after a one-hole playoff.
