Riley Elmes and Kaitlin Collom Earn Titles at 2014 Oregon Junior Stroke Play Championship
Riley Elmes (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Kaitlin Collom (Klamath Falls, Ore.) earned titles today at the 2014 Oregon Junior Stroke Play Championship after three days of fierce competition held at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn, Ore.
Elmes followed up his victory at the Oregon Junior Amateur Championship last week with his second win in a row. Collom won after making it to the Girls championship match at the Junior Amateur Championship at Waverley Country Club last week.
Elmes shot three consecutive under-par rounds, finishing the tournament with a three-day total of 202, 14-under par (67-68-67). Alex Wrenn (Lake Oswego, Ore.) finished in second place in the Boys division, shooting 11-under par the last two days and totaling 205 over the three-day tournament (72-65-68). Dylan Wu (Medford, Ore.) also shot three straight days of under-par golf, finishing in third place with a tournament total 9-under par 207 (70-70-67).
With victories in two of the biggest Oregon Junior Golf events of the year, Elmes’ focus on the events paid off.
“I rank these as probably the two biggest junior tournaments in Oregon,” said Elmes. “I built off my confidence in the last round and final match at the [Junior] Amateur, and then came out here and played strong all week and consistently hit the ball well, putted well. Everything kind of clicked. I just played three really solid rounds this week.”
Collom won by two strokes over second round leader Madison Odiorne (Bend, Ore.). Going into the second-to-last hole, the 125-yard par-3 17th hole, the two were tied for the lead in the tournament. Collom stepped up with an 8-iron, and hit an amazing shot that went in the hole. Her hole-in-one pushed her to two up on Odiorne heading to the final hole. After both made par, Collom emerged victorious.
In third place in the Girls division, Ellie Slama (Salem, Ore.) combined for a tournament-total of 223 (77-69-77). Sophia Schiavone (Gresham, Ore.) finished in fourth place, just one stroke behind at 224 (72-75-77).
