Romano, Johnson Take Titles at 2019 Oregon Mid-Amateur Championship
ALOHA, Ore. – Jonathan Romano (Vancouver, Wash.) and Gretchen Johnson (Portland) won their respective divisions at the 31st Oregon Mid-Amateur Championship played May 4-5 at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club in Aloha.
Romano (70-67-137) shot 5-under in Sunday’s final round which included six birdies – five coming on the final nine holes. He was the clubhouse leader with a 2-under par 70 on Saturday, a round buoyed by a cluster of birdies on the back nine.
Romano fended off a charge from Michael Johansen (Vancouver, Wash.), who finished two strokes back in second place after carding the low round of the tournament with his final-round 65. Chris Dukeminier (Portland) and Pat O’Donnell (Happy Valley) ended in a tie for third at 2-under par.
Johnson (69-68-137) ran away with the women’s division title, finishing 7-under par for the tournament. In Saturday’s opening round she tallied six birdies – three consecutive coming on Nos. 3-6 – to lead all scorers at 3-under.
Johnson also enjoyed the front nine on Sunday, with a birdie on No. 3 and an eagle on No. 5, a 231-yard par 4. She supplied three additional birdies on the back nine to finish 4-under for the round. Johnson was the only player in the field on the women’s side to shoot under par during both rounds of play.
Lara Tennant (Portland) finished in second place at even par, while Amanda Jacobs (Portland) took third at 3-over. Tennant (69-75-144), a four-time Oregon Mid-Amateur champion, was tied for the lead after the first round where she posted a 3-under-par 69, dotted by an eagle and two birdies.
The women’s competition featured 11 players, and played 5,761 yards with a course rating of 72.2 and a slope rating of 135. The men, with a field size of 72, played at just under 7,000 yards (6,968) with a course rating of 72.9 and a slope rating of 137.
Next up in the 2019 Oregon Golf Association and USGA Championships schedule is a U.S. Open Local Qualifier scheduled for Monday, May 13 at Waverley Country Club.
