A handful of OGA members and competitors are set to compete at the 2017 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball and U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball events. Both championships are taking place May 27-31, 2017, with the men’s competition occurring at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in North Carolina, and the women’s event commencing at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
At the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, the sides of Adam Araneo (Bandon, Ore.)/Justin Kadin (Corvallis, Ore.) and Gaston de la Torre (La Center,
Wash.)/Andrew Leneve (Camas, Wash.) will be competing. Araneo/Kadin won the qualifier for the event back in September of 2016, while de la Torre/Leneve were first alternates.
Kadin recently represented the OGA at this year’s PNGA Cup, while Araneo was a member of Bandon Dunes’ winning squad at the 2015 OGA Men’s Team Championship. De la Torre is a former collegiate golfer at New Mexico State University, while Leneve played college golf at the University of Oregon.
Leading the way at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball is Monica Vaughn (Reedsport, Ore.). Earlier this week she won the Individual Title at the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship, and helped her team (Arizona State University) win the team title, as well. In 2010, Vaughn became the youngest ever winner at the Oregon Amateur (15 years old), and also won the Oregon Junior Amateur and the Oregon Public Links in the same year. She’s playing with Bailey Tardy (Peachtree Corners, Ga.), who was Vaughn’s teammate in the 2016 Curtis Cup.
Two more Oregon natives are set to compete in the Women’s championship. Ellie Slama (Salem, Ore.) is coming off a second-consecutive OSAA Girls Golf title, winning by a whopping 19 strokes. Her playing partner is Amanda Minni (Delta, B.C.), who will join Slama at Oregon State University next fall. Ellen Secor (Portland, Ore.), a current Colorado State golfer, is competing with Katrina Prendergast (Sparks, Nev.), her teammate in Fort Collins. Secor was a decorated Oregon Junior Golfer, representing Oregon in numerous team competitions and earning a number of wins and top-5 finishes in OJG majors.
