Spencer Tibbits and Ellen Secor Battle Weather, Field for 2014 Central Oregon Junior Titles
The 2014 Central Oregon Junior Championship wrapped up on Tuesday, after a round at Meadow Lakes Golf Club in Prineville, Ore. on Monday and finishing up with a weather-shortened day at Juniper Golf Club in Redmond, Ore. on Tuesday.
The Boys Open Division and all Pee Wee Divisions were able to finish play on Tuesday. Around 1:30 on Tuesday afternoon, thunderstorms started to roll in the area, and play was suspended until 3 PM. Play was then resumed, but delayed once again around 5 PM with another wave of thunder and lightning close by. Shortly afterward, the tournament for all divisions except the Boys Open Division and all Pee Wee Divisions was reverted to an 18-hole championship.
Spencer Tibbits (Vancouver, Ore.) came from four shots back after the first day to win the Boys Open Division, finishing with scores of 69-70 – 139 and a 5-under par total. Tibbits finished with nine birdies and just four bogeys over the two days, as he defeated Riley Elmes (Lake Oswego, Ore.), who was looking for his fifth straight Oregon Junior Golf win, and Ben Wanichek (Eugene, Ore.) by one stroke. Elmes led after the first day after shooting a 7-under par round of 65, but fell back after shooting 75 (+3) on Tuesday. Wanichek completed the low score of Tuesday, finishing with a 5-under par round of 67 to go with his round of 73 (+1) on Monday.
Ellen Secor (Portland, Ore.) shot a 72 on Monday to take home the Girls Open Division title. Reilly Whitlock (Vancouver, Wash.) finished in second place after completing a 74 (+2) at Meadow Lakes. Tanner Washburn (Albany, Ore.) won the Juniors Division with an 84 on Monday, and Will Jones IV (Portland, Ore.) finished in first place in the Boys Division, winning in a scorecard playoff with three other players after all shot 77 (+5) at Meadow Lakes.
In the Girls Division, Amber Prevedello (Eugene, Ore.) shot an 82 on Monday to win first place. Elliott Goulet (Milwaukie, Ore.) defeated Jackson Kennon (Bandon, Ore.) in a scorecard playoff for the Intermediate Boys title, after both shot 76 (+4) at Meadow Lakes. May Wang (Portland, Ore.) won the Intermediate Girls title after shooting a 77 (+5) in the first round.
Scotty Kennon (Bandon, Ore.) fired two rounds of under par golf, as he won the Pee Wee Boys 10-11 Division with a two-day total of 35-33 – 68 (-4). Elliot Lee (Tillamook, Ore.) took home first place in the Pee Wee Boys 8-9 Division. In the Pee Wee Girls 10-11 Division, Baylee Hammericksen (Medford, Ore.) shot 42-38 – 80 (+8) to win first place, and Jade Gruher (Camas, Wash.) won the Pee Wee Girls 8-9 title.
Oregon Junior Golf’s next event is the 2014 Portland City/Bob Allard Memorial, scheduled for Monday, July 28th and Tuesday, July 29th at Rose City Golf Course in Portland, Ore.
