Stacked Field Heads to Bandon for 112th Oregon Amateur

The Oregon Golf Association will administer the 112th playing of the Oregon Amateur Championship July 5-10 on Bandon Trails Golf Course at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

This year marks the third time that Bandon Dunes plays host to an Oregon Amateur Championship. The world-class golfing destination also hosted in 2002 and 2009, with those competitions both held on Bandon Dunes Golf Course.

The 2021 men’s field features 108 players, including two former Oregon Amateur champions. The women’s field includes 48 players, a talented group led by two-time champion Ellie Slama and defending champ Amanda Jacobs.

Both the men and women compete in 36 holes of stroke play qualifying on Monday and Tuesday, which will determine the low 64 qualifiers for the men and the low 32 qualifiers for the women. If necessary, a playoff will be held for the last spot into match play or medalist.

Round one of match play begins Wednesday, July 7. The men’s division plays rounds two and three on Thursday, the quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Friday, and the 36-hole final match on Saturday.

Jacobs, a Portland native, took the 2020 crown with a 5&3 win over Slama in the final held at Columbia Edgewater Country Club. Slama  (2018 – Bend GC; 2019 – Portland GC) won back-to-back crowns before Jacobs ended her quest for a third straight. Kailin Downs, who won an Oregon Am title at Bandon Dunes Golf Course in 2002, is a third former champion adding to a strong women's field.

Previous champions on the men's side include 2008 champion Blake Seabaugh (2008 – Bend GC) and Bryce Wortman (2020– Columbia Edgewater CC). Wortman is seeking to become the first men's player to win back-to-back Oregon Am titles since Nick Chianello accomplished the feat in 2012 and 2013.

Additionally, the Oregon Senior Women’s Amateur Championship will be played at Bandon Trails, with that competition scheduled to take place July 7-10. It includes one stroke play qualifying round, followed by three rounds of match play.

Leading that field is four-time defending champion, Lara Tennant, who is looking to add a fifth title in as many years. Loree McKay, a three-time winner of the event, returns to seek her first title since 2014. Leilani Norman, who won this event 2013 and 2015, and 2004 champion Marcia Fisher add to an exceptional 24-player senior women’s field.

The last time the event was held at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort was in 2009, a year where Andrew Vijarro and Amy Beth Simanton took home men's and women's titles. The first time the Oregon Amateur Championship was held at Bandon Dunes was in 2002 when Greg LaVoi and Downs took home titles.

Live scoring, photos and summaries will be available at OGA.org throughout the week.
