BEND, Ore. – Gigi Stoll (Tigard, Ore.) and David Ganz (Portland, Ore.) stood out among the competitors during the first day of stroke play qualifying at the 109th Oregon Amateur at Bend Golf Club.

A total of 123 men and 26 women are vying for the Oregon Amateur and Oregon Women’s Amateur titles. After Tuesday’s round of stroke play, the men’s field will be cut to the low 64 players to begin match play on Wednesday. The women’s field will also start match play on Wednesday, with the top six seeds earning a bye into the round of 16.

Stoll, the three-time Oregon Women’s Amateur champion, broke the course record on Monday after shooting a blistering 6-under par 66. She ended her first nine holes with three straight birdies, making the turn at 2-under par. Her second nine featured four birdies and no bogeys – ending her round with a chip-in birdie on the par-4 9th hole, her final one of the day. The rising senior at the University of Arizona leads by five heading into Tuesday.

Ellen Secor (Portland, Ore.) sits in second place after a furious comeback on Monday. Her front nine was a struggle, as she made the turn at 5-over after shooting a 41. However, her second nine was a completely different story – six birdies in nine holes later, Secor finished at 1-under par after a second-nine 30. Secor, a rising junior at Colorado State, won this year’s U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship in May.

University of Houston golfer Amanda Elich (Camas, Wash.), Washington State golfer and Bend native Madison Odiorne (Bend, Ore.) and Oregon State rising sophomore Ellie Slama (Salem, Ore.) all sit in a tie for third place at even par after 18 holes.

The men’s field was led by Ganz, the recent graduate of Gonzaga University. He sat 3-under after nine holes, and after a few bogeys to begin his back nine, finished with two straight birdies to finish at 4-under par after the first round of play. At last year’s Oregon Amateur, Ganz advanced to the round of 16 before falling to 2008 champion Blake Seabaugh.

Eight players sit in a tie for second place at 3-under par, including Oregon State’s Spencer Tibbits (Vancouver, Wash.); University of Oregon golfer Marcel Boet (Eugene, Ore.); 2017 Oregon Junior Amateur champion Craig Ronne (Klamath Falls, Ore.), and two-time Oregon Amateur Four-Ball winner Trevor Harding (Portland, Ore.).

Brian Humphreys (Vancouver, Wash.), the Boise State golfer who’s finished runner-up the past two Oregon Amateur, is tied for 10th at 1-under par.
