Stoll Repeats, Docherty Battles Back to Emerge Victorious at 106th Oregon Amateur Championship
Aloha, Ore. (June 27, 2015) – And in the end there were just two.
It all started with 263 total entries, 192 of those attempting to qualify at one of four OGA administered qualifiers. Monday’s play began with 159 players and by Saturday afternoon, only two stood victorious.
Alistair Docherty (Vancouver, Wash.) and Gigi Stoll (Beaverton, Ore.) emerged atop them all as this year’s Men’s & Women’s Oregon Amateur Champions at the 106th holding of this storied Championship held at The Reserve Vineyard & Golf.
In the men’s final, Docherty, a Junior Chico State Wildcat Golfer, jumped out to an early lead with birdies on two of the first four holes before bogeys on the next two holes allowed his opponent, Northwestern University Sophomore Dylan Wu (Medford, Ore.), to get the match back to all square.
Wu began to take control of the match with a stretch of five birdies in six holes during the first 18 holes of the match before Docherty made two birdies on 16 & 17. Wu took the 18th hole to finish 4 Up at the conclusion of the first 18 holes of the match.
As they teed off in the afternoon on the 1st hole after a short break, Docherty again started hot with an eagle on the 515-yard par five 19th hole and won the 20th hole as well. It took Docherty until the 30th hole to get the match back to all square, before taking two of the next three holes on his way to a 2 & 1 victory and the title
The players in the men’s final combined for 20 birdies & two eagles on the day.
A former Oregon Junior Golf standout, Docherty previously won the 2013 Oregon Public Links Championship
“I played well in the afternoon, that’s for sure,” Docherty said. “Putts started dropping and I definitely couldn’t have done it without my caddie, Nigel.”
“I think once I started to put some pressure on [Wu], it just started to take a toll,” he continued. “That was some good golf all day from both of us, my putts just started to drop in the afternoon.”
In the Women’s final, defending champion Gigi Stoll defeated 4-time OSAA High School Champion Madison Odiorne (Bend, Ore.). Both players are set to begin their collegiate careers in the Fall where Stoll will attend the University of Arizona and Odiorne will attend Washington State.
Stoll began her journey toward the title with birdies on the first & fifth holes to take a 2 Up lead before Odiorne’s birdie on the par-five sixth hole. Stoll’s steady, consistent play saw her to continue to add to her lead with a birdie on 14 where the match stayed until they finished the first 18 holes.
Odiorne then birdied the par-five 19th hole for the last hole she’d win for the day. Stoll’s consistency lead her to win holes 20 and 21 with pars before birdieing holes 24, 27 and 30 on the way to her 8 & 6 win.
“I played pretty well - a lot of birdies out there, which helped my round get started,” Stoll said. “This is one of the most prestigious Oregon events and it’s really important to win it again and I’m just really, really happy.”
With sunshine and idyllic course conditions for the entire week, temps hovered in the mid-80’s to mid-90’s throughout the competition.
“The staff at the Reserve did a tremendous job leading up to and throughout the week preparing for this competition,” said OGA Director of Tournament Operations Brent Whittaker. “Jason and his crew are to be commended for the way this course presented for our players – we couldn’t have asked for better conditions.”
And while only two titles where crowned, many players competed fiercely throughout the week.
“We saw some tremendous golf by so many of our competitors,” he continued. “In an event of this magnitude, the best-of-the-best come out to compete as this is Oregon’s premier amateur Championship.”
The location of the 107th Oregon Amateur has yet to be finalized and officially announced, however it will be held June 20th – 25th, 2016.
