Aloha, Ore. (June 23, 2015) – Alex Wrenn (Lake Oswego, Ore.) fired a second round 64 (-7) to make a major move up the leaderboard after his first round 70 (-1) at today’s final round of stroke-play qualifying at the 106th Oregon Amateur Championship.
However, a playoff was still needed for medalist as Arthur Kim (Tigard, Ore) and Conner Kumpala (Albany, Ore.) also finished at 134 (-8). It took Wrenn just one hole with a birdie on the par-five first to take medalist honor.
“It was a great day, I was just playing solid on the front,” Wrenn said after his round. “I’ve just been grinding, making sure that everything’s in good shape coming in.”’
Wrenn’s bogey-free round consisted of eight pars and a birdie on the front nine and six birdies in his final seven holes.
When all was said and done, 18 players finished at even-par or better with surprisingly low scores for the difficult conditions and a playoff was needed to get to 64 players for the match-play field.
13 players headed out for five spots just before 8pm for a playoff and after three holes Ryan Pickthorn (Damascus, Ore.), John-Michael Pilot (Vancouver, Wash.), Andrew Grove (Newberg, Ore.), Billy Pollock (Eugene, Ore.) and Greg Chianello (Portland, Ore.) advanced.
In the Women’s Championship, Bend’s Madison Odiorne two-under par second-round charge overcame defending champion Gigi Stoll (Beaverton, Ore.) to earn medalist honors in the Women’s Championship. Hannah Swanson (Forest Grove, Ore.) even-par second round put her tied for second with Stoll at 146. Brie Stone (Veneta, Ore.) finished at 147.
“Yesterday my ball-striking was really good, but missed a few putts that should have gone in,” Odiorne said after her round. “Today it was kind of opposite, my ball striking wasn’t as good but a lot of putts just fell in.”
Match-play commences Wednesday at 8:00 with the Women leading off. For complete coverage of the 106th Oregon Amateur Championship, click here.
