Team Oregon #1 Wins 48th Hogan Cup; Samuel Pyon, Craig Ronne Earn Co-Medalist Honors

PORTLAND, ORE. – Team Oregon #1 pulled away from the field to win the 48th Eddie Hogan Cup Team Matches on Sunday, asteammates Samuel Pyon (Happy Valley, Ore.) and Craig Ronne (Klamath Falls, Ore.) shared co-medalist honors at Riverside Golf & Country Club in Portland, Ore. The 2016 Hogan Cup was held this weekend, from August 13-14.

Team Oregon #1 fired a sizzling second-round 211 (-5) on Sunday, widening its lead as the day went on. The squad entered the final day of play leading Team Washington by one shot. At the end of Sunday’s round, Team Oregon #1 won by an impressive 12 shots, finishing the Hogan Cup with scores of 217-211 – 428 (-4).

Sunday marked the first time since 2008 that a team from Oregon has won the Hogan Cup.

The squad from Southern California earned second place, shooting 223-217 – 440 (+8). Team Washington, who entered play on Sunday one shot back of the lead, finished in third, shooting scores of 218-224 – 442 (+10).

Individually, Team Oregon #1 swept medalist honors. Samuel Pyon, who was tied for the lead entering Sunday’s round, earned co-medalist honors with Craig Ronne, who fired a red-hot 67 (-5) on Sunday to come back from four shots back after Saturday’s round. Pyon finished with scores of 69-71 – 140 (-4), while Ronne shot 73-67 – 140 (-4). Hawaii’s Zackary Kaneshiro (Aiea, Hawaii) earned third place, shooting 69-72 – 141 (-3).

It’s the first time since 2003 that a player, or in this case, players, from Oregon has been a Hogan Cup medalist.

Carson Barry (Eagle, Idaho), of Team Idaho, and Charles Reiter (Palm Desert, Calif.) of Team Southern California, tied for fourth place, finishing at 1-under par (143) for the event.
