Three Divisions Crown Stroke Play Medalists at 2018 Oregon Junior Amateur

WARRENTON, Ore. ­­– Three divisions finished stroke play qualifying on Monday at the 88th Bob Norquist Oregon Junior Amateur Championship, held this week at Astoria Golf & Country Club in Warrenton, Ore.

The Junior Boys (ages 16-18), Girls (ages 15-18) and Boys (ages 14-15) divisions finished stroke play qualifying on Monday and will begin match play on Tuesday. The winners of this week’s Championship in the Junior Boys and Girls divisions are crowned Oregon Junior Amateur champions.

Nate Stember (Portland, Ore.) earned medalist honors in the Junior Boys division, firing a 2-under par 69 to medal by two shots. Just last week, Stember earned medalist honors at 2018 U.S. Junior Amateur qualifying, advancing to this year’s championship in the process. Stember, a rising senior at Lincoln High School in Portland, won the individual Class 6A State Title last month.

Two players – Johnny Ward (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Peter Grossenbacher (Eaton, Colo.) – tied for second, both firing even-par rounds of 71. Carter Lee (Tillamook, Ore.) earned fourth place, shooting 72 (+1) on Monday.

In the Girls division, Olivia Loberg (Bend, Ore.) finished at even par for 18 holes to earn medalist honors. Loberg, a rising senior at Summit High School in Bend, recently won her second-consecutive Class 5A individual state title.

Three players tied for second place during stroke play qualifying – Victoria Gailey (Tigard, Ore.), Mary Scott Wolfe (Beaverton, Ore.) and Ashley Zhu (Salem, Ore.). All three players finished at 2-over par.

The Boys division featured some of the lowest scores of the day. Scotty Kennon (Bandon, Ore.) finished as medalist, shooting a scorching 4-under par 67 to lead the way. Brody Marconi (Portland, Ore.) earned second place at 3-under par, while Brandon Eyre (Salem, Ore.), Mateo Fuenmayor (Beaverton, Ore.) and Ethan Tseng (Portland, Ore.) all tied for third, finishing stroke play qualifying at 1-under par.

The Junior Boys, Girls, and Boys divisions will all begin match play on Tuesday.

The other two 18-hole divisions, the Intermediate Boys and Intermediate Girls divisions, finished 18-holes on Monday and will play another 18-holes of stroke play qualifying on Tuesday. Pee Wee Boys and Pee Wee Girls will play 9-hole stroke play qualifying on Tuesday. Match play will start on Wednesday for these divisions.
