Three Players Advance to the 2016 U.S. Open; Aaron Wise Earns Medalist Honors

VANCOUVER, WASH. – Three players – Aaron Wise (Lake Elsinore, Calif.), Travis Howe (Charlotte, N.C.) and Matt Marshall (Carlton, Ore.) – advanced to the 2016 U.S. Open Championship through sectional qualifying held Monday at Royal Oaks Country Club in Vancouver, Wash.

The U.S. Open sectional qualifier held Monday at Royal Oaks CC was one of 10 qualifiers held around the country on the same day. Two international sectional qualifiers were held in May.

Wise, the recent NCAA Men’s Division I Individual Champion who also won the team championship with the University of Oregon, medaled in the 36-hole sectional qualifier with scores of 67-68 – 135, 9-under par. He totaled 14 birdies in his two rounds, with only five bogies on the day.

The second qualifier, Howe, finished with scores of 70-67 – 137 (-7). His front nine on his first 18-hole round was up-and-down, as he shot a 2-under par 34 but also included an eagle, a double-bogey, and three birdies. During his second round, Howe was steady, tallying another eagle along with four birdies and only one bogey.

The last qualifying spot was decided in a two-person playoff between Marshall and Austin Connelly (Irving, Texas), as both shot a 36-hole total of 138 (-6). Both golfers parred the first two playoff holes, but after Connelly three-putted for bogey on the third hole, Marshall two-putted for par and the final U.S. Open berth.

Connelly earned the first alternate spot, while Frederick Wedel (Roseville, Calif.) defeated Timothy Ailes (Delaware, Ohio) in a playoff to claim the second alternate position.

The 2016 U.S. Open Championship will be held June 16-19 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa.
