Top Seeds Advance as 107th Oregon Amateur Continues on in Match Play
BLACK BUTTE RANCH, ORE. – Top seeds Sulman Raza (Eugene, Ore.) and Gigi Stoll (Tigard, Ore.) each won their respective matches on Wednesday, as the 107th Oregon Amateur Championship completed its first day of match play at Black Butte Ranch – Glaze Meadow in Black Butte Ranch, Ore.
The men’s bracket played one round today, as the field dwindled from 64 to 32. Two rounds will be held on Thursday, as the round-of-32 and round-of-16 matches will take place and the quarterfinals will be set by the end of the day.
In the women’s bracket, the field played two rounds on Wednesday. Round-of-32 matches were played in the morning, while round-of-16 matches were completed this afternoon, as the quarterfinals will take place on Thursday.
Top-seeded Raza won his first match of the championship, 4 and 2 over Alex Lee (West Linn, Ore.). He’ll play the 33rd seed, Daniel Cheremnov (Hubbard, Ore.), in the round-of-32 Thursday morning. Kevin Murphy (Rogue River, Ore.), who is the No. 2 seed, advanced as well on Wednesday and will face off against Brian Humphreys (Washougal, Wash.) tomorrow morning.
Upsets were abound on the men’s side, as 15 of 32 lower seeds won their opening match. That included Greg Chianello (Portland, Ore.), the 58th seed, as he defeated 7th-seeded Nicklaus Baines (Portland, Ore.), 1-up. Fifty-sixth seeded Jacob Varriano (Olympia, Wash.) beat the No. 9 seed, Braeden Campbell (Washougal, Wash.) 1-up, and the No. 55 seed, Kevin Mackin (El Dorado Hills, Calif.), advanced to the next round after defeating the No. 10 seed, Arthur Kim (Tigard, Ore.), 2-up.
The longest match of the day was between Kevin Geniza (Corvallis, Ore.) and Lauri Malinen (Walla Walla, Wash.). Malinen won the final four holes after going dormie going into the 15th hole, and Geniza finally won on the 23rd hole after five extra holes.
Stoll received a bye in the first round of the women’s bracket, and defeated Jessica Young (Wedderburn, Ore.) 6 and 4 to advance to the quarterfinals. She’ll play 8th-seeded Sarah Archuleta (West Linn, Ore.). Of the 10 first round matches, all high seeds advanced, with the exception of 18th-seeded Chloe Barnes (West Linn, Ore.), who upset 15th-seeded Rosie Cook (Bend, Ore.) 2 and 1.
In the round-of-16, No. 2 seed Madison Odiorne (Bend, Ore.) advanced to the quarterfinals after a close match against Barnes, 1-up. The No. 3 seed, Jenny Krause (Eugene, Ore.), fell to the 14th seed, Hannah Swanson (Forest Grove, Ore.), 2 and 1. The other upset in the bracket came when the No. 12 seed, Lynsie Furuya (Vancouver, Wash.), defeated Daniele Giles (Talent, Ore.), the No. 5 seed, after 20 holes.
