Two Advance to 2016 U.S. Senior Open Championship
PORTLAND, ORE. – Amateur Scott Vermeer (Boise, Idaho) earned medalist honors while professional Brian Mogg (Windermere, Fla.) won in a playoff as both players advanced to this year’s U.S. Senior Open Championship after sectional qualifying held Monday at Waverley Country Club in Portland, Ore.
A total of 65 players competed in the 18-hole U.S. Senior Open sectional qualifier, with two spots up for grabs.
Vermeer nabbed low-amateur and medalist honors thanks in part to seven birdies, finishing with an even-par round of 71. He finished his round on the par-3 ninth hole, where he sunk a 25-foot birdie putt from just off the green which ended up being the key putt that advanced the Boise resident to the championship proper.
Three players tied for the second qualifying spot – professionals Brian Mogg and Brent Murray (Tigard, Ore.) and amateur Scott Schulz (Gig Harbor, Wash.). On the first playoff hole, Mogg just missed his 15-foot birdie attempt that would have sealed his spot in the championship. However, both Murray and Schulz missed their mid-range par attempts, thus clinching Mogg’s spot as the second qualifier for the 2016 U.S. Senior Open.
Murray is the first alternate into the championship, after defeating Schulz two playoff holes later. Schulz is the second alternate.
The 2016 U.S. Senior Open Championship will be held August 11-14 at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio.
