RECORD 101 WEB.COM TOUR ALUMS IN THE FIELD AT THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP
With the deepest field in golf set to compete at THE PLAYERS, 101 former Web.com Tour alums will descend upon The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. Since 1999, six former Web.com Tour alums – David Duval (1999), Craig Perks (2002), Stephen Ames (2006), Tim Clark (2010), Matt Kuchar (2012), and Jason Day (2016) – have gone on to win THE PLAYERS. A year ago, Day set a 36-hole scoring record at THE PLAYERS and became the first wire-to-wire winner since Hal Sutton in 2000 on the way to his 10th career TOUR victory, edging out fellow Web.com Tour alum Kevin Chappell by four shots.
2016 GRADS HEAD FOR THE PLAYERS
Seven 2016 graduates have earned spots in the field at THE PLAYERS – Wesley Bryan, Mackenzie Hughes, Cody Gribble, Cameron Smith, Rod Pampling, D.A. Points, and Grayson Murray. Bryan, the 2016 Web.com Tour Player of the Year, leads the contingent at No. 16 in the FedExCup standings following his win at the RBC Heritage in April. Bryan, Hughes, Gribble, Smith, and Murray are all making the first appearance at THE PLAYERS.
NATE LASHLEY TAKES HOME FIRST CAREER VICTORY IN DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Nate Lashley played his last 66 holes without a bogey to win the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship by one shot over Augusto Nunez with a 20-under 268 total for his first career victory. Lashley, 34, who has just 35 career Web.com Tour starts, earned $112,500 with the victory and jumped up to No. 2 on the money list. His $167,913 in earnings is more than $17,000 above the threshold needed a year ago to finish inside the top 25 on the Regular Season money list and earn a PGA TOUR card.
NUMBERS TO KNOW
2- The top-two players on the PGA TOUR Latinoamerica Order of Merit in 2016 were the top two on the leaderboard at the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship with Lashley in the top spot and Augusto Nunez just one shot behind. Both Lashley (2) and Nunez (16) are in the top 25 on the money list after eight events.
5 – Every player inside the top five at the 2016 BMW Charity Pro-Am – Richy Werenski (1), Zack Sucher (T2), Brian Campbell (T2), Brett Drewitt (T2), and Brandon Hagy (5) – went on to earn their PGA TOUR cards.
139 – The 36-hole cutline at the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship came in at 5-under 139, the lowest of the season. The 5-under total was three shots lower in relation to par than any other cutline on the Web.com Tour this season and the lowest in relation to par since 2015.
2017 WEB.COM TOUR MEMBER TO WATCH
Adam Svensson – 23 – Surrey, British Columbia, Canada
Adam Svensson earned entry into the 2015 Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament with a ninth-place finish on the 2015 Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada Order of Merit, and then proceeded to blow past the field with a record-setting seven-shot victory. Svensson’s rookie year on the Web.com Tour didn’t come quite as easily, as the young Canadian produced only two top-10s in 24 starts on his way to a 59th-place finish on the Regular Season money list. The 23-year-old is back for his second season and produced a career-best T6 finish at last week’s Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship to move up to 45th on the money list.
During a decorated career at Barry University, Svensson won nine of his last 14 tournaments before turning professional during his junior season. The two-time first-team All-American helped Barry to back-to-back national championships and won the 2014 Jack Nicklaus (Division II) National Player of the Year award. After turning professional in 2014, Svensson first appeared on the Mackenzie Tour, where he posted two runner-ups in six starts.
