Wortman, Slama Win 2014 Southern Oregon Junior Titles

The Oregon Junior Golf tour rolled on earlier this week, with the Southern Oregon Junior wrapping up at Rogue Valley Country Club on Tuesday, July 15th.

Bryce Wortman (Klamath Falls, Ore.) took home the Boys Open Division title, shooting two under par rounds to finish with 68-71 – 139 (-5) for the two-day event. Eddie Abellar (Vancouver, Wash.) was the only other player to finish under par for the two days, ending up in second place after scores of 70-73 – 143 (-1). In the Girls Open Division, Ellie Slama (Salem, Ore.) pulled ahead of the rest of the field after she shot 2-under par 70 on Tuesday, finishing with scores of 78-70 – 148 (+4). Ellen Secor (Portland, Ore.) finished in second place at 12-over par (80-76 – 156).

Temperatures were warm on Monday and Tuesday, varying from the low to mid-90s both days. However, play was able to end around 4 PM each day, avoiding the hottest part of each day. With the recent dry weather, Rogue Valley CC was in great condition, including fast and smooth greens.

Jaycob Caples (Redding, Calif.) took home the Boys Division title, with scores of 78-74 – 152. In the Juniors Division, Brandon Chun (Medford, Ore.) earned first place after scores of 83-77 – 160. Kelsie Hellwege (Eugene, Ore.) won the Girls Division title, while Victoria Gailey (Tigard, Ore.) won first place in the Intermediate Girls Division after finishing 15-over par (80-79 – 159).

In the Intermediate Boys Division, Nate Stember (Portland, Ore.) shot the low round of the tournament on Tuesday, shooting a 5-under par 67. For the two days, he finished at 78-67 – 145 (+1). Scotty Kennon (Bandon, Ore.) earned first place in the Pee Wee Boys 10-11 Division after finishing at 5-over par (36-39 – 75), while Messiah Gilbert (William, Ore.) won first place in the Pee Wee Boys 8-9 Division. In the Pee Wee Girls 10-11 Division, Baylee Hammericksen (Medford, Ore.) won the title after scores of 40-41 – 81 (+9), and Zoe Newell (West Linn, Ore.) earned the Pee Wee Girls 8-9 Division title.
